From dark volcanic soils in the south of Italy on the instep of the heel, this is a wine of real soul. It is deep and complex, with dark berry fruits and notes of scorched earth and flowers. There is real precision here, with a finish that lasts for minutes. Serious stuff and typically Italian. Critic tasting note: (2016 vintage) “A delightful mix of crushed rock, red berries, pink peppercorn and violet drive the nose. There’s polish to the palate, where coiled red-berry fruit is propelled along an immensely tangy river of crushed stones. It’s a stripped back expression of the variety that shows elegance and power in tandem. Drink through 2030. Alexander Peartree” – 92/100, Wine Enthusiast

Serious Italian wine from the far south true to its volcanic soils.

Dark red, nearly black. Cork soaked through but the wine was fine. Bright cherry, ash, pomegranate, cherry pit. Palate similar with full body, rich tannins, medium+ acidity and a long finish. Definite re-buy. 92+

Should have decanted. Took 2+ hours to open and was great at that point. Wait 3-5 years to try remaining bottle.
Appearance: medium-deep, between ruby and garnet. Some sediment in bottle.
Nose: dark fruit, Asiago.
Palate: very dry, tannic but not harsh, med+ acidity, more fruit. After 2 hours smoothed out and was much better.
Finish: medium duration, not bitter.

Still needs some time after opening to come alive. Really comes into its own after about 2 hours – much smoother and better integrated. Lovely food wine (spicy turkey sliders)… Might still be on the young side.

Decanted 2 hours in advance (almost no sediment) and gave a couple round trips through an aerating decanter. Full fresh nose with dark fruits. Expansive palate with decent acidity, ripe tannins and not-overripe flavors. Excellent pairing with rack of lamb. This is a great time to be drinking this – with plenty of breathing in advance. Or practice restraint and see where cellar evolution takes this. But with the Giro d’Italia passing nearby today this bottle’s time had come.
