1949 Chateau Cos d’Estournel, Saint-Estephe, France
£895.00
An immortal wine from an incredible vintage it is considered to be the best ever Cos!! This for its age is a good bottle with decent mid shoulder levels and an intact scuffed capsule. A truly special and very rare bottle.

I love the ’49 clarets and the Cos d’Estournel is a good illustration of why with its open, flattering, strawberries and cream nose. A panoply of detail unfolds; clove at times (pepper at others), star anise, cedar, toffee, cèpes. There’s a little volatile acidity and a tiny hint of Brett, but it all manages to hang together, bound by the natural loveliness of the 1949 vintage and the nuances of age. Still fullish in the mouth, the pleasing roundness is pierced by refreshing acidity and its crushed velvet tannin. Flagging after a couple of hours with a woody, slightly dry finish, this is a wine to be enjoyed today.
