History has it that Madeira Wine’s main mentor was Prince Henry the Navigator, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape variety, originally from Candia de Crete, on the island of Madeira, which proved to be a success. By the mid-15th century, Madeira Wine was already being exported, with export routes including Europe, where it was considered highly refined, and was even used as a perfume for the handkerchiefs of court ladies. This nectar’s prestige was such that references to it are not uncommon in the history, art, and legends of some nations.
